Blackwattle’s Equity Income Fund is led by one of Australia’s most experienced and respected equity income teams.

The team, comprising of Rudi Minbatiwala, Jason Moodie, and Marlon Chan, brings a combined 70 years of investment experience and a 17+ year history of working together at First Sentier Investors, where they managed a highly regarded Equity Income strategy since 2008.

About the Fund

The Blackwattle Equity Income Fund is now live and available for investment.

The strategy focuses on, what we believe to be, the highest quality companies in Australia whilst utilising options to diversify income streams and actively manage downside risk.

The fund will offer daily liquidity and target a 2.5% yield above the ASX equity market dividend yield.

Investment Objective

The Fund aims to provide an income return of 2.5% p.a. above the S&P/ASX 100 dividend yield over a rolling three-year period, delivered with consistently lower volatility than the S&P/ASX 100 Total Return Index.

The Fund also aims to provide a total return that exceeds the composite index of 75% S&P/ASX 100 Total Return Index / 25% RBA Cash Rate, over the long term.

Investment Team

Rudi Minbatiwala

Portfolio Manager and Partner

Rudi has more than 25 years of investment experience and has built a strong track record in the management of objectives-based investment strategies.

Prior to joining Blackwattle, Rudi was Head of Equity Income at First Sentier Investors, where he established the Equity Income capability in 2004 and led the development of the investment philosophy and process. Rudi was also a Senior Portfolio Manager, Equity Analyst (Small Companies) and Senior Quantitative Analyst during his 24 years at First Sentier Investors.

Rudi holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Acturial Studies) and Bachelor of Applied Finance from Macquarie University, a CFA charterholder and graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Rudi is the Portfolio Manager of the Blackwattle Equity Income Fund.

Marlon Chan

Portfolio Manager and Partner

Marlon has over 17 years of investing and finance experience.

Most recently, Marlon was a Senior Portfolio Manager at First Sentier Investors where he led the stock research process, derivatives analysis and quantitative portfolio risk analysis for the Equity Income Fund, an Australian equities strategy focused on high income and low volatility outcomes.

Marlon completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Actuarial Studies and Finance) from the University of New South Wales and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries Australia where he previously lectured the Investment Management and Finance specialist stream.

Marlon is the Portfolio Manager for the Blackwattle Equity Income Fund.

Jason Moodie

Portfolio Manager - Implementation and Partner

Jason has spent over 30 years within the funds management industry and has a depth of knowledge spanning equities portfolio management, derivatives trading, and investment systems design.

Most recently, Jason was Senior Portfolio Manager for the First Sentier Equity Income Fund, a strategy that he jointly established in 2008. Jason had been with First Sentier Investors since 1998 and also worked with Westpac Investment Management, Prudential and Colonial First State during his career.

Jason is a specialist in equity options portfolio management and is the Portfolio Manager – Implementation for the Blackwattle Equity Income Fund.

Jason holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from the University of Sydney, majoring in computing and research statistics.
